The Fourth Monkey by J.D. Barker
The Fourth Monkey is the first book I’ve ready by J.D. Barker. I am very much looking to #2 in the 4MK series.
The Fourth Monkey Killer starts with a man getting hit by a bus, and in his possession they find a notorious white box tied with black ribbon. In the box? An ear.
Detectives Porter, Nash, and Claire (she has a last name, but she mostly went by Claire) kick into gear, when they realize that this man is the Four Monkey Killer. The Four Monkey Killer kidnaps women, delivers their ears, eyes, and tongue in succession before finally killing the woman. And here he is, about to deliver an ear, laid out in front of them dead!
On him is a diary, which detective Porter reads throughout the story. The story flip flops between the diary and present day investigation. I enjoyed the diary storyline a lot.
Meanwhile, back at the investigation, Nash, Porter, and Claire are trying to frantically find the woman whom the ear belongs. But the 4MK Killer was a smart bird, leaving puzzles behind his crazy game.
My review of The Fourth Monkey
I agree with the others, 5 star book all the way. So why did I give it 4 stars? I guessed the ending way too early. There was one particular key factor that I was like “COME ON, why don’t the cops see that???” LOL. I was hoping I was wrong. I wasn’t, but it was OK, the book was intriguing enough to keep me invested in the story anyway.
The diary really kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. It’s about an anonymous boy (called “Champ” by his dad) and his goings on at home. Lesbians, domestic violence, torture, murder… all from the point of view of “Champ”. A true creeper for sure.
J.D. Barker is an excellent writer. The next book in the series is The 5th to Die, to be published sometime in 2018. I’m looking forward to reading it.
4 monkey stars.
